Washington-based international trade law firm Steptoe & Johnson LLP has established a presence in Asia with the opening of an office in Beijing earlier this week. Whilst the firm has provided advisory services to numerous clients doing business in China for some time now, it believes that the new premises – to be managed by Eric Emerson, a partner in the firm’s International Trade and China practices – will enable it to better serve China-based clients as well as multinational clients doing business in this growing legal market. Matters the firm is currently working on include representing the Chinese Ministry of Commerce on dispute settlement proceedings before the World Trade Organisation, advising a well-known American brand regarding market access issues in China, and representing the interests of Chinese footwear producers in antidumping duty proceedings conducted by the European Commission.
