In a move that reflects a growing trend, Bryant Edwards, US corporate partner and head of the Middle East for Latham & Watkins has relocated to Hong Kong. Headwinds have noticeably shifted recently with a number of international firms announcing plans to relocate many of their partners from the US and the UK to Hong Kong and China (e.g. Clifford Chance and Berwin Leighton & Paisner.) On the back of strong economic growth in the HKSAR and the PRC, international firms are giving a nod to the region’s prospects particularly in the corporate, M&A and litigation/dispute resolution arena and firming up their departments here accordingly.

Edwards has a deep well of experience in capital markets, Islamic finance, restructurings and M&A.He spearheaded Latham & Watkins’ four offices in the Middle East, served as the Chair of the Middle East practice and spent eight years as Chair of the Corporate department at their London office. He commented that Asia’s ascent in the global economy was “breathtaking” and that he “saw tremendous opportunities for his clients on the New Silk Road.” He believes that the firm’s knowledge and expertise will allow it to “advise on the growing business ties and trade between the two regions.”
