International non-profit organisation Lawyers Without Borders has appointed former Shearman & Sterling partner Edward L. Turner as chair of its board of directors. Before his retirement from practice, Turner practised corporate law for thirty-six years and was responsible for setting up Shearman & Sterling’s Asia practice, which included a twelve year spell in Hong Kong as an M&A lawyer and managing partner of that office. He first undertook pro bono work for Lawyers Without Borders in 2006 as a neutral trial observer of local court trials in Ethiopia and Namibia, and has also conducted training with local legal professionals in South Africa and Turkey. In his new role for Lawyers Without Borders, Turner will be involved in setting the US-based organisation’s long-term initiatives and developing relationships with partner law firms in the US and Europe. On the appointment, the organisation’s Executive Director Christina Storm commented, “Ed’s global career is an example for our volunteers, sponsors and supporters. His decades of legal expertise combined with on the ground field experience makes him the ideal person to highlight the work being done by Lawyers Without Borders volunteers around the world.”
Lawyers Without Borders – which is dedicated to preserving the integrity of the legal process through training, community outreach, capacity building, neutral observation and other mechanisms that support the rule of law in national contexts consistent with international norms – currently works with more than two dozen law firms, developing programming and leading international pro bono projects. The group currently has ongoing projects in Liberia, Rwanda, Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya. |
