Nishimura and Asahi (N&A), Japan’s largest law firm with 450 lawyers and foreign attorneys, and Soga, Uryu & Itoga (SUI), a smaller Japanese firm which houses 7 Chinese lawyers, have announced their intention to form a business alliance regarding their respective China practices. Whilst the firms will remain independent entities, at least for the time being, both view the alliance as a means of meeting the increasing legal needs of clients from both inside and outside Japan as Asia, and especially China, continue to play a role in the economic growth of the global economy. The alliance will take the form of a working relationship, and it is hoped that N&A’s expertise in domestic and international matters, combined with SUI’s extensive resources, experience and knowledge regarding the China market, will enable the firms to provide comprehensive, integrated legal services with respect to their China practices.

N&A already has an East Asia practice group consisting of more than ten Japanese and Chinese (including Taiwanese) lawyers, who focus on deals and matters relating to China and other East Asian countries, and the firm has engaged in attorney exchanges with leading law firms in China. In addition to its plans to expand its practices to include South East Asia, India and the Middle East, the firm is eager to further expand its East Asian capabilities and presence by opening a Beijing representative office early next year, and has submitted an application to do so with the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Justice.
