Paul Smith, the partner known for spearheading the ‘partnering and convergence’ arrangements with DuPont and Tyco International, has been elected the new Chairman of Eversheds. Smith, a litigation wizard, who has worked at Eversheds since the late 80’s will begin his term on May 1st 2014 for four years. He succeeds John Heaps – who did not stand for re-election.

Smith remarked, “Eversheds continues to see great opportunities and potential in the Asia-Mena markets. We already have an exciting and growing practice in the region. In my new role as Chairman, I will be focusing on growing the firm’s presence and resource in these territories. Our operations there have reached a level of maturity where a more integrated approach will take us to the next level. I believe that my particular expertise and long experience in the areas of business partnering and convergence will help us to bring innovative and new ways of working with our clients. Coupled with our commitment to quality and client service, this approach will help to distinguish Eversheds from our competitors. I am very excited about our plans for the future development of our practice there and look forward to working closely with our lawyers on the ground.”

Smith has defended numerous companies in the context of criminal investigations across North America, UK and Europe and has also been instrumental in consultations with global corporate law departments. He is known for his expertise in formulating cost-effective solutions which led to the DuPont legal model as well as extracting greater value from outside counsel particularly in the arena of structures, processes and practices.
