We have witnessed a growing trend in Indonesia of late, as international firms have sought to capitalise on the country’s manifold growth. (We have also seen other countries in the region, for example: Malaysia looking to tap Indonesia’s blossoming clientele, see for example our Latest News piece on the Azmi & Associates and RBS tie up in our News archive online.)

Notably, a number of ‘relationship’ firms are emerging, as many of the big players are forming alliances with local firms on the ground in a bid to leverage a widening band of clients. With a winning triumvirate that consists of a young population, rising international trade and a rapidly expanding demographic which includes middle class consumers, it is no surprise that numerous law firms are looking for a foothold in the market. DLA Piper is the latest firm to do so, forming an association with Ivan Almaida Baely & Firmansyah on 1st May 2013. Others include Hogan Lovells in association with Hermawan Juniarto, White & Case with MD & Partners and Linklaters through their Australian partner Allens with Indonesian firm Widyawan & Partners.

Sir Nigel Knowles, Global Co-CEO of DLA Piper stated “We make it our business to do business where our clients do business…it makes sense for us to formalise our close ties with our partners there.”
