Allen & Overy LLP has appointed Dave Poddar as a partner in the firm’s nascent Sydney office, and a member of its global competition group. A partner at Mallesons Stephen Jacques since 1998, Poddar brings to the magic circle firm more than 20 years of competition and anti-trust experience in the areas of merger clearances, competition issues in concentrated markets, access matters in regulated industries (including rail, gas, electricity and telecommunications), cartel matters and general competition law. In addition to having acted on several of Australia’s largest financial services mergers, resources takeovers and infrastructure projects in the LNG and resources areas, Poddar also holds several industry and thought leadership positions including Chair of the Trade Practices Committee of the Law Council of Australia and Vice Chair of the IBA Antitrust Committee.

The appointment bumps the firm’s number of partners in the Sydney office to eighteen, and also indicates A&Os intention to broaden its focus down under. The firm launched the new office earlier this year with a focus largely on capital markets and energy and natural resources. Poddar is the first competition partner among the Sydney team.
