Allen & Overy has appointed Peter McDonald as a partner to head the firm’s antitrust and competition practice in Australia. He brings many years of experience as a competition partner specialising in merger clearances, complex regulatory matters and defending clients in investigations and legal actions by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). McDonald joins from Herbert Smith Freehills where he has advised clients across a broad range of industries, including the energy, mining, industrial, retail and financial services sectors. He also brings a wealth of trade practice experience from his time as a senior officer at the ACCC and is a current member of the Competition and Consumer Committee of the Law Council of Australia.

Minter Ellison strengthens its team in Asia with the recruitment of two former managing partners of international firms in Asia.

Jem Li, a New York qualified corporate lawyer who has practiced in China for the past 10 years, was previously the managing partner of US firm Winston & Strawn in Beijing. Li returned to China from the US in 2004 and is well-known for handling mining rights and investments in Europe, North America, Latin America, Central Asia and Africa. His past representations include transactions for Chinese state owned-entities and multinationals with operations in China and the region. Li’s practice focusses on cross border transactions, including M&As, private equity investments, joint ventures, international equity capital markets and PRC inbound and outbound investment. He commenced on 2 December 2013.

Rebecca Silli, a major projects and infrastructure specialist with 13 years’ experience in Asia, was the former managing partner of French firm Gide Loyrette Nouel in Hong Kong. Her infrastructure and projects practice spans a range of sectors, including environmental services, transport, construction and other infrastructure projects. Silli has led projects teams across Asia, most recently in mainland China, Hong Kong, Myanmar, India and Indonesia. She also has a strong background in M&A and regional FDI. Her experience includes working with European and Chinese clients on major projects and transactions in China. She holds a postgraduate degree (DESS) in business law and taxation (Paris II, Pantheon-Assas University, 1998) and is admitted to practice in Hong Kong and France. She is vice-president of the French Chamber in Hong Kong and a French Foreign Trade Advisor. Silli will start with Minter Ellison in Hong Kong on 6 January 2014.
