Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP has bolstered its Asia practice with the appointment of Andrew Horton as partner in the firm’s marine, energy & trade (MET) practice in Hong Kong. Horton joins the firm from the Hong Kong office of Richards Butler (in association with Reed Smith LLP) where he was a partner. He is recognised as one of Hong Kong’s leading marine lawyers and has over 19 years’ experience in shipping and insurance litigation, more than 17 of which have been spent in Hong Kong. His practice complements the firm’s MET practices in London, Shanghai and Singapore.

Gide Loyrette Nouel has further strengthened its Asia banking & finance group with the appointment of Samuel Chau as head of banking and finance in its Hong Kong office. Chau has over 15 years of experience working for a broad range of major corporate and financial institutions. His transaction experience has been focused on the PRC and includes advising on project financings for limited recourse property development projects, formation of real estate project funds, lease financing, syndicated loan facilities to sovereign entities, acquisition financing, distressed debt, and mergers of banks in Hong Kong.

Hemant Sahai Associates has appointed Navin Syiem as partner in the firm’s Delhi. He has joined the firm from Ashurst, where he was a senior associate in that firm’s corporate department based in Dubai. Syiem has previously worked as the India legal counsel for GE Commercial Finance, and also worked with two of the top law firms in India prior to joining GE. His blend of in-house and Indian and international private practice experience will strengthen the firm’s corporate and finance practice.

J. Sagar Associates (JSA) has announced that Amitabh Kumar will act as senior advisor to the firm at its New Delhi Office in respect of regulatory and tax matters. Kumar, a 1978 batch Indian Revenue Service Officer, recently retired as Commissioner of Income Tax. He served as the first Director General of the Competition Commission of India from 2004 to 2009, and earlier in his career was also engaged as Departmental Representative of the Income Tax Department at the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal for six years. In an illustrious career spanning thirty-one years, he has handled diverse assignments in the sphere of regulation, public finance and policy, and has gained significant consulting experience with the African Development Bank, The World Bank, UNDP and Department for International Development (UK) in strategic policy areas. He has also served on the Board of several public sector undertakings.
